Poster promoting the First Exposition of Artists of Navarre, held in Pamplona in 1940. The period between 1940 and 1960 was really peculiar for the artists of Navarre: the Civil War was over, the Francoist regime had begun. The First Exposition of Artists of Navarre was the first milestone of this period: the regime exhibited the artists who survived the war and aligned to the regime. Spanish postwar is often regarded as a period of artistic regression: this is untrue, as a lot of artists realized interesting works, although isolated from the main art movements of the time. The difficult economic situation damaged the art market, especially in Navarre: the artists did not abandon the easel painting, but they specialized in other fields, too: graphic illustration, posters, mural painting, stage design.
